What Can You Expect From A Life Insurance Medical Exam?

your medical examAs part of the application process to get life insurance, most insurance companies require you to have a medical examination. You may be thinking to yourself, Oh man, that sounds time consuming and possibly costly. You’re in luck, though, because the medical exam you need will only take about 15-20 minutes. Do you not have time to go to the doctor’s office? Well, you don’t have to worry about that either because you won’t need to account for travel time to the the doctor’s office. The exam is conducted by a medical doctor or licensed paramedical and they will come to your home or office, whichever location is most convenient for you. As far as the cost is concerned, well, there isn’t one! The exam is at no cost to you because the life insurance provider will pay for it.

What you can expect for the medical exam:

  • review of medical history

  • basic physical exam to include your height, weight, pulse, and blood pressure

  • blood work

  • urine sample

In addition, your life insurance company may require you to take additional tests, like an EKG (electrocardiogram), or fill out an additional questionnaire. You can be sure that all of your information will be entirely confidential. You do not need to do much to prepare for the medical exam, but there are a few pieces of advice we recommend you take into consideration:

  • Drink plenty of water 12 hours prior before your exam

  • Refrain from alcohol, coffee, tea, soda 12 hours prior to exam

  • Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco on the day of your appointment

  • Avoid strenuous exercise during the 24 hours prior to exam

  • Make sure you are well-rested

  • Schedule an appointment time that works best for you. *Keep in mind that morning exams yield optimal medical results

  • Be ready to answer questions about any medical conditions you have, medications you currently take, or surgeries you’ve undergone

The time is takes for the results from the lab to be sent to the insurance company and for them to be carefully reviewed typically takes less than two weeks. Each insurance company varies on the time it takes for the application to be processed. Ask your company for an estimated time to receive word on your personal application.
