Earth Day 2013 – April 22nd

earthday2013We focus greatly on the importance to maintain our health and lifestyle to live well and balanced lives. Maintaining a small waistline and energizing ourselves with nutritious foods are goals we can all agree we want to reach. Sometimes, we are so concerned for ourselves that we neglect something bigger than all of us combined- the Earth. The Earth’s waistline is 24,901 miles long, which means we have a lot of life to take into consideration.

To bring awareness to the Earth and it’s natural environment, the entire globe celebrates Earth Day once a year. A former United States Senator, Gaylord Nelson, founded Earth Day in 1970 and now it is celebrated in over 170 countries. This year, Earth Day will be celebrated on Monday, April 22.

You may be wondering how you can do your part to support the Earth, not only on this special day, but on each day of the year. Fortunately, there are many ways in which you can contribute to Earth’s vitality:

  1. Pick a day out of the month that you can walk or ride your bike to the market instead of taking the car.

  2. Add a recycling can next to your normal trash can in your home or office.

  3. Plan to hold a garage sale to encourage reusing resources.

  4. Find a local club or organization that is devoted to preserving Earth’s natural resources.

  5. Open your windows to let in fresh air instead of turning on the air conditioner.

  6. Go for a run outdoors instead of running on a treadmill that requires electricity.

  7. Donate your old cell phones and empty ink cartridges to a foundation that recycles them correctly.

  8. Educate yourself about current policies concerning pollution, climate change, endangered species, etc.

  9. Replace hazardous sprays and toxic cleaners with Earth-friendly products in your home.

  10. Take shorter showers and turn off the faucet off while you are brushing your teeth.

In our busy lives, it’s hard to realize how dependent we are on our Earth’s resources. Our smart phones and fast cars draw us further from the richness of the Earth and closer to the technology-focused society we have become. However, preserving mother nature has never been more important. SelectQuote encourages you to take a break from the office work, turn off your electronic devices in your home, take a walk outside with a loved one, soak up pure Vitamin D and just smile.
